Abstract

The i.r. absorption spectra of 5-cyanopent-1-ene on a decationated Y-zeolite and on a sodium-Y zeolite have been compared. It is shown that both functional groups at either end of the alkene-nitrile interact with the H-Y surface. From the absence of adsorption bands at 3080 and 1642 cm–1 from the spectrum of the adsorbed molecule on H-Y it is concluded that adsorption is accompanied by loss of the alkene bond. New bands which appear at 2400 and 2900 cm–1 with a shift of the 2250–2280 cm–1ν(CN) vibration upon adsorption suggest some hydrogen-bonding interaction between the nitrile group and surface hydroxy-groups.
