Abstract

An infra-red resonance observed in the interband contribution to the optical absorption and in the magneto-optical absorption is interpreted in terms of transitions connecting states near the top of the d↑ and d↑ bands. Then the exchange splitting, identified to the resonance peak energy, is ΔE d = 0.56eV. The model used, which places the onset of the L 2′↓ → L 3 u ↓ transitions at 0.65eV, is shown to account correctly for the main features of the optical and magneto-optical spectrum of nickel.
