Abstract

Information technology and the Internet are crucial components of the day-to-day life of adolescents and young adults and thereby may influence their cognitive development. The aim of this study is to develop a guiding document that can serve as a source of information for researchers investigating the impact of information and digital technology, and Internet use on adolescent cognitive development. We explored patterns in adolescent Internet use and analyzed widely accepted relevant research findings and issues that addressed how the Internet or online interactions influenced adolescent cognitive development. We also investigated the ways the Internet and its users changed over time. Differing views of researchers on Internet use and adolescent cognitive development were also presented. The scope of this research includes ICT driven practices, digital divide, readily available technological tools, adolescent cognitive development, Internet use, information technology, and digital technology. Understanding the role of ICT and digital media in supporting collaborative learning environments was the supplemental scope of the study. Findings suggested that students perceive technology and technological devices as an integral part of their day-to-day lives. In addition, adolescents consider the use of technology as vital in developing their academic and cognitive skills. Adolescents also feel skillful when they acquire basic IT skills and perceive these skills as a necessity for their career growth. This study provides a guiding document, which describes the constructive side of technology that affects adolescent learning and development. Implications for future research tell that researchers should develop clinical and experimental evidence in support of Internet use and adolescent cognitive development. Further, self-regulation strategies should be developed for online learning environments so that adolescents can get better outcomes from their Internet and ICT use. These self-regulation techniques will also help adolescents to regulate their online habits and behaviors.
