Abstract

Databases are commonly used in schools in the U.K. in teaching history. The computer can enable new sources to be introduced to pupils and encourage them to develop skills in statistical analysis. However, the potential exceeds the practice since many history teachers are untrained in statistical techniques. Discussion of the use of a particular data base package. Pride's Purge, suggests ways in which history teachers can be introduced to the techniques of quantitative analysis in order to raise their students' levels of attainment in constructing causal explanations in history. The design and development of the package illustrates an approach to inservice training in both information technology and an academic discipline.
