Abstract

There is growing concern about the adverse effects of the man-made environment on the health of human beings or human populations. However, we rarely have precise answers to questions like, what's the state of the environment, how is the health of populations? The lack of information was especially evident during the well-known industrial accidents of Chernobyl and Basle. In Switzerland it was realised that both environmental monitoring and the monitoring of the health status were incomplete. Furthermore, the data were stored at many different places and were thus hardly accessible and available. In general, only the specialists knew the data sources and their usefulness. It is therefore obvious that the information system has to be improved and the first steps have been taken.
