Abstract

In a global marketplace, large organizations find that they must compete against smaller, more limber firms that are often better able to quickly adapt to new market conditions. In responding to this challenge, these large organizations must develop new, more flexible forms of organization as well as more adaptive information systems. In turn, security managers must rethink traditional approaches to designing and implementing security controls. In fast-changing, competitive environments, rigid, centralized controls ma)- actually threaten the ability of the organization to respond to change. Security managers must therefore understand the conflicts that can aries in using traditional security controls. They must take an active role in developing new control mechanisms that support rather than hinder the organization's ability to adapt to change.
