Abstract
A new direction of scientific research is proposed, i.e., "information-resource studies." The current state of scientific investigation into information resources is assessed, and analysis of approaches that are adopted in defining the phenomenon of "information resources" is presented; the shortcomings of existing classifications of information resources are identified. The results that are achieved at the empirical stage of cognition with regard to information resources are summarized, possible formation of the theoretical division of information-resource studies is considered, general theoretical problems of information-resource studies (establishment of a scientific definition, identifying the nature, properties, and functions of information resources, the definition of functional metasystem of information resources, relations with the basic concepts of allied sciences) are discussed. Theoretical approaches to investigations into information resources and formulated prospects of information-resource studies enable us to declare that the transition from the classical rationality to nonclassical and postnonclassical rationality is inevitable. Attention is drawn to the integrative character of this new scientific field, which necessitates the recruitment of researchers from the entire documentary communication cycle in its development.
