Abstract

The pre dialysis information is the first step of a pre dialysis education program. All the patients must be informed. To make an objective choice, all treatment modalities must be offered including transplantation. The nephrologist in charge of the patient evaluates the contraindications for peritoneal dialysis or haemodialysis and prescribes the nurse pre dialysis information. The patient and his/her family are informed on an individual basis: a first consultation to document patient's status and inform him/her about the different modalities of treatment, the second to answer the questions and have modality option. The information provided must be neutral. It is an information and not a formation, the main patient's issue at this stage is how including dialysis in his personal life. Two recent studies concluded that multidisciplinary care is associated with a significant reduction in the risk of all-cause mortality. Early nephrology referral allows a multidisciplinary approach to chronic renal diseases which seems more effective in improving patient care and survival.
