Abstract

The present study was conducted in Ludhiana and Chandigarh, the two high productivity regions of Punjab to assess the felt information needs among the commercial dairy farmers of Punjab. A total of 60 commercial dairy farmers were selected. Semi structured interview schedule and observation method were selected for data collection. The study revealed that majority of the commercial dairy farmers needed information on General management (51.40%) and Health care (51.25%). On the basis of mean score, information was most needed in the area of clean milk production (2.21) followed by common cattle/buffalo diseases (1.95), care of new born calf (1.93), scientific way of shed construction (1.87) and fodder preservation and enrichment (1.73). Majority of the respondents fell under the medium category of the information need while socioeconomic factors like age, training and social participation had a significant effect on the information needs of the commercial dairy farmers. Hence, to overcome these needs, it is required to develop an appropriate information system for information dissemination at the door step of the farmers.
