Information Literacy Competence and Use of Electronic Information Resources among Undergraduates in University of Ilorin, Nigeria

Abstract

The study examined information literacy competence and the use of electronic information resources by undergraduates in the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The population of the study was 744 undergraduates. A sample size of 260 undergraduates in the Faculty of Law was randomly selected. Data were collected using a questionnaire designed to elicit a response from respondents and data were analysed using IBM-SPSS version 21.0 with descriptive statistics methods percentages, frequency, and correlation analysis. The findings of the study revealed that there were various electronic information resources (EIRs), such as full-text, image, reference sources, and audio/visual. Similarly, the study revealed that undergraduates had developed various information literacy competences to identify the need, and to locate and access information. The findings revealed that undergraduates in the Faculty of Law have various patterns of usage of EIRs. Moreover, the study revealed a significant relationship between information literacy competence and the use of EIRs. We concluded that undergraduates in the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin have information literacy competence and their use of EIRs is above average. The study recommended that university management should earmark more funds to the library to buy more reference resources that enhance e-resources utilisation.
