Abstract

The 21st century is a milestone for information technology; smartphones, tablets, computers, among other devices are part of each individual's daily life, whether as a leisure tool, in their personal life, or professionally, as a work tool, making technology one of the most comprehensive and employment fields. Thus, it is important that educational institutions are aware of advances in information technology, seeking the development of teachers and students. The purpose of this work is to understand how information technology occurs in Brazilian basic education. For this, a bibliographic review of the literature was performed, focusing on three aspects: 1) information technology in basic education and its history; 2) implementation and lack of computing education in Brazilian basic education; 3) consequences of this lack of computing education; and 4) the profile of a teacher with qualities for teaching information technology in the basic education network. Among the discussions, it was identified that, in addition to investing in the consolidation of computer labs, it is necessary to invest in teacher training; that it is necessary to reformulate the curriculum and search for new methodological models; that information technology in education stimulates creativity, logical reasoning, collaboration, and research capacity; that schools find difficulties on the use of computing, and that knowledge of computing is necessary for new professional practices.
