Abstract
The function of the contemporary family has been of interest to researchers since the advent of the nuclear family structure. Likewise researchers have been exploring the role of other informal group sectors such as friends and neighbors. This article examines one such function, mediation between elderly individuals and bureaucratic organizations. Findings suggest that the elderly are not relying on informal group members to negotiate bureaucratic structures, and questions regarding the theoretical and research implications are discussed.
