Abstract

Whilst governments are slowly recognising informal economic activities, little research has focused on the nature of informal entrepreneurship as a form of work. Using Bourdieu’s theory of practice, this paper unpacks the everyday life of Ukrainian entrepreneurs operating informally in the UK. By identifying the heterogeneous nature of entrepreneurial practice, the paper considers how individuals mobilise different forms of capital in the pursuit of informal entrepreneurship – driven by opportunity as much as necessity. The paper concludes by reflecting on the ramifications for policy and directions for further research.
