Abstract

Flying by plane over Cairo, it is easy to recognize the degree of deterioration and breakdown of urbanity. A belt of urban informal areas surrounding the formal city is indeed a common phenomenon in many cities worldwide. This chapter investigates the informal city of Cairo and its urban fabric. It argues that the integration and correlation between the modes of informal housing systems of production, reproduction, consumption and distribution of goods and services, and its taxonomies offers possibilities for sustainable transitions in spatial development, capital accumulation and social structure. Housing informality in Cairo is “a site of transitions” response to tremendous socio-economic and political transitions over time. This chapter concludes that the linkages between the three modes of housing informality and urban sustainability transition depending on the four interrelated systemic transitions and urban informality which could be integrated with the urban context sustainably to overcome the fragmented situation.
