Abstract

This article reports on adult education research conducted in four rural Roman Catholic parishes, led by female pastors. Specifically, the research focused on the informal teaching strategies—modeling, coaching, networking, and continuous dialogue—employed by the pastors to assist parishioners in learning about co‐leadership styles, the necessity of Sunday worship in the absence of a priest (SWAP), the parishioners’ role in parish leadership, and the qualifications necessary for authentic parish leadership and sacramental ministry. Possibilities of using informal and incidental teaching for adult religious education are also discussed.
