Abstract
This experiment was carried out to evaluate the influence of the environmental and genetic factors on the litter size and mortality rate at birth and weaning f pigs in Paraiba, Brazil. The Zootechnical data was collected from farm SUPASA, in the district of Guarabira, state of Paraiba, Brasil. They were analyzed the data of pure swine Landrace and Large White and crossed animals (Landrace x Large White), born in the period from 1995 to 1996. The following characteristics were evaluated number of born pigs per litter (piglets born alive) and the rate of mortality of the pigs at weaning, in relation to the mother’s race, month and year of parturition, and sex of the pigs. After the studies of the collected data significant differences were verified among races for the litter size, it was observed that Landrace andthe crossed showed larger number of pigs per litter than Large White. The year and the month of parturition mad significant effect on the litter size, as well as the mortality rate. KEY WORDS: Breed, genetics parameters, produtive effficiency, reproduccion, swine
