Summary

Introduction

Influenza A and influenza B viruses are the two types of influenza viruses which cause human epidemic disease. Most influenza viruses cause asymptomatic or mild infection in birds; the range of symptoms in birds varies greatly depending on the strain of virus. Avian influenza strains were first reported from Hong Kong [11] during the 1997-1998 influenza season and were shown to be derived from avian sources without genetic reassortment between avian and human influenza viruses [11].
