Abstract

Temperature and chlorophyll a time series were analyzed from monthly mean images from OCTS, SeaWfis and AVHRR between -78.5:-74.5 W y 13-10N. The 0.25 and 0.5 mg/m3 concentration isolines and an analyzed of mean components was used in order to find out the extension and direction of the Magdalena river plume in the Colombian Caribbean. During the dry season (dic-april) the Cl-a was observed with high concentration in the Colombian Carribbean as a tongue in W-NW direction. In the rainy season (sept-nov) the direction was meanly N-NW but during the transition period (may-august) the direction of the plume was meanly N-NW. Approximately 60% of the Cl-a analyzed time series shows the higher concentration between November and march, 37% of the medium values was found during July and September, while 75% of the lower concentration values was found during April June. Bearing in mind that Colombia was affected by El Niño event in 97 and 2002/03, very low influence in the biomass of the primary producers around the Magdalena river plume vas found.
