Abstract

The effects of carburizing, carbonitriding, surface finishing and lifter rotation on the wear of cam–lifter systems were investigated in this study. A three-dimensional wear measurement method developed previously was used to measure the wear volume of lifters. From the results, it was found that carbonitriding has higher wear resistance than carburizing. Plateaued surfaces yield lower wear volumes than non-plateaued and the rotation of lifters can reduce wear volumes.
