Abstract

In order to fabricate Al2O3 ceramics with high transparency, six types of commercial α-Al2O3 powders were consolidated with a two-step pulsed electric current sintering (PECS) in this study. High density in Al2O3 usually has a positive effect on its transmittance, while as some α-Al2O3 powders show low transparency with almost full-densification. It suggested that abnormal grain growth may affect transparency of Al2O3 ceramics. Since pressure sintering in Al2O3 is influenced with dynamic grain phenomena, the differences in abnormal grain growth must be influenced with difference in properties of Al2O3 powder such as crystallinity.
