Abstract

Nano-chitosan was synthesized and reacted with fir wood to study its effects on physical properties. Nano size of the chitosan was initially determined by using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) as well as the zeta meter to confirm nano-structures. The measurements were indicated that the nano-chitosan particles achieved nano-sizes with an average of 39 nm. SEM microscopy confirmed that the nano-particles are in spherical and polygonal forms. Fir wood blocks were treated with the nano-chitosan at concentrations of 1, 2 and 4 %. Water absorption as well as dimensional stability of the wood due to the treatments were determined in the samples after soaking in water. Bulking effect due to the treatment as well as wood density were determined in the treated samples. Results revealed that the dimensional stability of treated wood was enhanced at concentrations of 2–4 %. Any increase of the nano-chitosan concentration was caused Bulking of the wood and reduced the wood density slightly.
