Abstract

The influence of the zeta-potential, ζ, of a suspended solid phase and the filter aid on the filtration efficiency of aqueous suspensions on precoat filters has been studied. It is suggested to study this influence together with the liquid purification mechanism. A criterion for the identification of liquid purification mechanism during precoat filtration was determined. It is proposed to take only two purification mechanisms into account: the mechanical and the adsorptional. The change of the solid phase particle distribution after filtration was used as such a criterion. A correlation between liquid purification mechanism and filtration regime on precoat filter was observed. It was shown that the ζ-potential of the solid phase of a suspension and the filter aid have a considerable impact on the filtration efficiency for the adsorptional mechanism of the liquid purification, whereas they have virtually no influence on the efficiency of mechanical liquid purification. The influence of the filter aid deposited on top of the filter baffle on the filtration efficiency for different ζ-potentials was also studied.
