Abstract

Summary Using the strip drawing test as a model test and the cup drawing test, the tribological behaviour of aluminium sheets with various surface microstructures and roughness Is examined. The test results provide information about desirable features of a surface microstructure; tribologically favorable surface geometries should possess the following characteristics: a non-directional structure, a restricted range of roughness parameters, narrow roughness peaks with a low bearing area, a given peak density and a uniform structure of the roughness. Furthermore, the test results indicate that an important element in the promotion of micro-pressure cavities is a sufficiently pronounced smoothing effect.
