Abstract
Because in some categories of air transportation, V/STOL aircraft will be much more competitive with fixed wing aircraft in the future, they must be considered as a factor in airport design. The cost of V/STOL operations are decreasing, so that they can be considered for use on short-haul, high-traffic routes. Airports for V/STOL aircraft must be located near population centers, which makes them expensive and subject to criticism over the resulting noise.
