Abstract

Optical microscopy studies have been carried out to study the effect of twinning on the superconducting properties of bulk YBa2Cu3O7-δ (1 : 2 : 3) using a range of samples which have been prepared under different conditions of temperature and pressure in the authors' laboratories and elsewhere. Although the preparation temperature influences both the mean grain size and the incidence of twinning, critical transport current density measurements made at 77 K on each sample are found to be uncorrelated with the incidence of twin boundaries in the samples. The implications of this finding are discussed.
