Abstract

Abstract Seasonal fluctuations of soil moisture; ammoniacal, nitrite, nitrate and total nitrogen; total bacterial plate count; nitrite and nitrate formers and soil temperature at 3 depths were studied in the humid sub-tropical allvial plain of India, at Kanpur. The sharp seasonal changes result in considerable fluctuations of these soil properties. In general, nitric and total nitrogen and bacterial plate count follow the soil temperature variations while organic carbon content follows a different trend. Appreciable numbers of nitrite and nitrate formers were observed only in summer. Even at high soil temperature and low soil moisture content the soil micro-organisms remained active.
