Abstract
The dispersion relation for gravity waves on a semi-infinite incompressible fluid layer satisfying the Jeffrey model was studied theoretically. The wave phase velocity and damping rates were studied as a fuction of wave numbers and time constants. Rayleigh wave modes can exist on a Maxwell fluid. For a Jeffrey fluid, any non-zero retardation time constants prohibit the existence of Rayleigh waves. However, elastic propagating wave modes may exist for a limited range of wave numbers.
