Abstract
The effect of substitution Ti for Co in Sm 2Co 17− x Ti x compounds with 0⩽ x⩽1.13 on the structure and magnetic properties have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic measurements. The XRD patterns show that all compounds investigated are single phase with the rhombohedral Th 2Zn 17-type of structure. Substitution of Ti for Co leads an expansion of the unit cell. The saturation magnetization M s and Curie temperature T C are found to decrease with increasing Ti concentration. The XRD patterns of magnetically aligned samples indicate that the easy magnetization direction (EMD) of all compounds is along the c-axis at room temperature. The anisotropy field B a at 5 K and room temperature is found to increase with increasing Ti concentration, attaining a maximum value at about x=1.0.
