LITTLE precise information is available on the role of the thyroid hormones in the chicken and most reports indicate a need for further research in view of some important differences between avian and mammalian thyroid physiology. In the present investigation, the effects of thyroxine on growth rate, feather and comb growth and that of thyroxine and triiodothyronine on metabolic rate of the chicken were determined. In addition, the results of the effects of dietary iodine content on body weight, thyroid weight, thyroidal iodine content and various parameters of the thyroid secretion rate of the chicken are presentedMATERIALS AND METHODSDay-old White Leghorn cockerels obtained from a single hatchery, were placed in brooders adjusted to 35°C. and kept on a 14 hour per day lighting period.
