Abstract

In this work, an acoustic emission (AE) technique was used to investigate an influence of the sheet thickness on bendability of AA5052-H32 aluminum alloy sheet. The three point bending tests with varying sheet thicknesses and punch plate radii were conducted to describe the bendability of aluminum alloy sheets. The AE sensing technique was used to indicate cracks, and to evaluate the bendability of the sheets. Three AE signal features (maximum amplitude, root mean square and peak-to-peak) were extracted from the AE signals. The results confirm that the AE technique could be applied to detect a fracture from bending behavior as well as to evaluate the bendability of aluminum alloy sheet.
