Abstract

From measurements of the velocities of longitudinal and transverse ultrasonic waves along the x- and ac-axes, respectively, the temperature dependence of the elastic constants C 11 and C′ 66 of synthetic quartz crystals has been determined in the temperature range 4–300 K. Analysis of the experimental results allows an estimate to be made of the relative strength of the anharmonic coupling of the ultrasonic waves to the strongly dispersive transverse acoustic mode.
