Abstract

AbstractThe kinetics of polymerization of MMA activated by ultraviolet irradiation at various temperatures and the polymerization of monomer with dicyclohexylperoxycarbonate have been studied. The activation energy of the polymerization with percarbonate is 14.9 kcal./mole, and that of polymerization with photooxidized monomer is 11.2 kcal./mole. The temperature at which ultraviolet‐oxidation of MMA (0–40°C.) is carried out has no significant influence on the kinetics of polymerization of activated monomer. The gel effect in the case of the dicyclohexylperoxycarbonate‐initiated polymerization of MMA is somewhat greater than that of monomer activated by photooxidation.
