Abstract

Copolymers of alkyl methacrylates with vinyl butyl ether were prepared by gradual addition of the active monomer to the inactive monomer. The resistance of these copolymers to mechanical degradation and their thickening power in petroleum oils were studied in comparison with those of the polyalkyl methacrylates used in industry. The influence of the molecular weight of the copolymers on the above characteristics was examined. The alkyl methacrylate-vinyl butyl ether copolymers exhibit enhanced resistance to mechanical degradation in a petroleum oil solution.
