Abstract

In order to understand the performance of the new Al 2O 3 + SiC whiskers ceramic cutting tools, the basic concepts for mechanics of composite materials have to be considered: aspect ratio of whiskers, fiber volume, homogeneity, anisotropy etc… During nickel alloys machining the toughening effect of the whiskers reduces the wear resulting from micro-fracture and particles removal mechanism. The composite ceramic tools can be used from scale removal to finishing with at least the same tool life as bulk ceramic tools, furthermore a better reliability can be expected.
