Abstract

The influence of magnetic field tapering on gyrotron operation is studied by generalizing the well-known η1(μ3,F) plot. It is found that in general a positive magnetic field taper increases efficiency, but at the same time increases the danger of the self-excitation of parasitic modes, while a negative magnetic field taper decreases efficiency and reduces the probability of the self-excitation of parasitic modes.
