Abstract

The flux focusing type double stator and single rotor (DSSR) axial flux permanent magnet motor (AFPM) has a high torque density and an inherent compact multipolar disc-type structure, which is suitable for the direct-drive in-wheel traction applications, such as electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and electric bikes and scooters etc. In this paper, the flux focusing type DSSR AFPM is analyzed using a 3D finite element analysis (FEA) method. The permanent magnets (PMs) are inserted in the rotor for the flux focusing, and the stator has fractional slot and double layer concentrated tooth coil windings to reduce the end winding length. The influence of the magnetic bridges or ribs of the rotor on the performance of the flux focusing type DSSR AFPM is investigated, using a 3D FEA.
