Abstract

We have studied the influence of the grid on the inhomogeneity of a fluidized bed using the stability criterion of a heterogeneous jet forming downstream of a single opening in the grid. From the momentum balance equation for the heterogeneous jet we were able to derive the condition In G \\ ̌ 1 for which the effect of the grid on the damping of concentration oscillations in the fluidized bed is a maximum. The criterion In G of inhomogeneity is obtained theoretically; it contains only physical constants that can be determined easily (the diameter and pitch of the openings, the relative free area of the grid openings, the fluid phase and solid phase densities, the fluid velocity and the acceleration of gravity) and two empirical parameters that are precisely physically defined, namely the angle of the jet and the mean volume concentration of the fluidized bed in an isolated part of the jet.
