Abstract

Summary The effects of the field rate and the double field rate of four fungicides, Bayleton, Desmel, Sportak and Corbel, on a mixed culture of nitrifying bacteria were studied over a period of 4 weeks. The effects of these fungicides on nitrification were different. Bayleton (5 ppm and 10 ppm) showed no inhibitory effect on ammonium oxidation but a strong inhibition of nitrite oxidation at double field rate (10 ppm). Desmel (5 ppm and 10 ppm) did not influence any step of the nitrification process. In the presence of field rate of Sportak (12 ppm) a significant inhibition of ammonium oxidation was observed. The effect was stronger at double field rate (24 ppm). Nitrite oxidation was totally inhibited by both the Sportak concentrations. Corbel (10 ppm and 20 ppm) exerted an inhibitory effect only on ammonium oxidation. Nitrite oxidation remained almost unaffected.
