Abstract

The influence of the anchoring energy on the critical field for Freedericsz transition is analysed. By considering a simple example we show that the method of the trial functions gives the correct threshold field. The importance from a pedagological point of view of this method is underlined. We deduce also an expression for the threshold field simpler than that proposed by Rapini-Papoular. Finally the presence of thek 13 term is considered. We show that in this case the function minimizing the nematic total free energy is discontinous and the surface discontinuity is determined.
