Abstract

The influence of temperature on the autophoretic coatings formation from carboxylated butadiene–styrene copolymer on steel samples was investigated in the range 0–60°C. Above 20°C, film destruction processes begin to take place. A kinetic equation is proposed to describe both processes of formation and destruction of the film. The apparent activation energy of about 20 kJ mol −1 for the film growth process is in agreement with the proposed mechanism for which the rate-determining step is the diffusion of iron ions through the film.
