Abstract

Abstract The sintering rate of uranium dioxide UO 2 + x increases with deviation from the stoichiometry x . The best composition for sintering rate and crystal growth corresponds to an O/U ratio of 2.25. It has been shown that surface diffusion and evaporation-condensation, which are considerably influenced by deviations from stoichiometry, promote grain growth during the second and third stages of UO 2 + x sintering. During the third stage, the grain growth is blocked after a certain time and the mean grain size never exceeds 10 μm. The U 3 O 8 added to adjust the stoichiometric deviation, establishs a fine porosity network, thus accentuating the influence of surface phenomena.
