Abstract

This paper describes the influence of sugar in contaminant to outdoor insulation characteristics of glass insulator. First of all, field tests were carried out to analyze the pollution layer condition of discharged glass insulators. Then the differences of surface resistance, leakage current and flashover voltage of glass insulators between the contaminants with and without sugar were investigated in the lab. Finally, the variations of surface resistance and initial discharge voltage of glass insulators with different sugar density were studied under the different relative humidity (RH). The research results show that surface discharge of glass insulator coated the contaminant containing sugar is enhanced and more sugar density leads lower surface resistance and stronger discharge, when the pollution layer is not saturated with moisture. But the influence decreases gradually with the increasing of RH. When the pollution layer is saturated with moisture, the surface resistance and flashover voltage would show little change regardless of influence of sugar.
