Abstract
The evolution of the crystal structure parameters and the magnetic behavior in the UCoAl 1− x Sn x and UCoAl 1− x In x solid solutions was studied. The substitutions of Sn and In for Al in UCoAl lead to a rapid destabilization of metamagnetic phenomena and the appearance of ferromagnetism already for small amounts of substitutions ( x≈0.02). The Curie temperature ( T C) and the spontaneous magnetization ( M s) in the UCoAl 1− x In x compounds increase monotonously with x over the entire solubility range 0< x≤ 0.2. The Sn substitutions lead to a more complicated development of T C and M s, both showing a minimum with x at approximately 0.20–0.25. For higher Sn content, the material becomes magnetically hard showing a rectangular hysteresis loop, H creaching 1 T in UCoSn. The role of the Al, Ga, In and Sn p-electron states in the electronic structure and the evolution of 5f-electron magnetism is discussed.
