Abstract

Records of approximately 800 rats which had been used in vitamin A bioassay were studied with the view of ascertaining the effect of associated factors on growth response during the assay period. Among the factors studied in relation to growth were: length of depletion period, weight of test animal at various stages of depletion, gain or loss in weight during the latter part of the depletion period, amount of feed consumed during the last 3 weeks of the depletion period, strain of rats, sex of rats, and the amount of feed consumed during the assay period. The data were tabulated in the respective catagories and evaluated statistically. From the results it was concluded that serious consideration should be given to the following factors at the time of assigning vitamin A-deficient rats to assay groups: ( a) length of the depletion period, ( b) weight of rat, ( c) total gain or loss in weight during the later stages of the depletion period, and ( d) the sex of the test animal.
