Abstract

In the last two decades, land disposal of sludge expanded after it appeared to be a generally advantageous and environmentally sound method. In addition to its fertilizing value, this organic material is likely to improve the soil physical condition. The gradual decrease in the organic matter content in cultivated soils, which may lead to deterioration of the soil physical status and erosion, is particularly worrying in warm areas, where organic matter decomposes rapidly. The application of organic wastes such as sludge has gained renewed interest as a means of maintaining sufficiently high organic matter contents in soils.
