Abstract

Neutron structural study shows that partial substitution of Co for Cu in YBa 2Cu 3O 7 − δ leads to an uptake of excess oxygen in chain-layers, but causes some oxygen depletion in CuO 2 planes. Coupled Co/Ca substitution arrests uptake of excess oxygen which could be the cause of partial restoration of T c vis-à-vis the samples doped with Co only. A new feature of the doped samples is the presence of a small amount of oxygen at the (0,0,½) sites.
