Abstract

The influence of crystalline form of silica on the morphology of mullite whiskers in Na 2SO 4 flux was studied. Isolated mullite whiskers with 5 μm in average length were observed in the sample with amorphous and fused silica while clusters of mullite whiskers were obtained in the sample with quartz. Two distinct nucleation mechanisms were proposed to explain the morphology of the mullite whiskers.
