Abstract

AbstractIn this article, the wind responses of the U plan shape tall building have been indicated by numerical analysis using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for 0°, 30°, 60° and 90° wind angles. A similar height of the U shape building has been maintained in each case, but the side ratio’s influence on wind induced responses has been studied by varying the side ratio to 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. The comparison of mean pressure, flow pattern and force coefficients has been illustrated. The pressure contour plots of the building faces have been demonstrated to indicate the local pressure variation. The mesh sensitivity and validation study has been executed to evaluate the calculation error in the numerical simulation. The remarkable lift and drag coefficients variation have been noted when the side ratio increases. The pressure fluctuations on the building faces have been observed since the building’s shape and wind direction changes. This indicates that the clad elements of the building should be carefully built to withstand the pressure variations. Detailed information about the influence of side ratio on an irregular shape building has been discussed in this study, which will guide the engineers during construction.KeywordsWind induced responsesComputational fluid dynamicsWind angleSide ratioMesh sensitivity studyMean pressure coefficientFlow patternForce coefficientsPressure contour
