Abstract

We have calculated electron energy distribution functions for a discharge in helium at a reduced electric field strength 1000 V/m torr, taking into account the ground state and with atoms excited in the collisions of electrons with atoms in the ground state and with atoms excited in the states 2 3S, 2 1S, 2 3P, and 2 1P. It appears that especially the excitation of atoms in the state 2 3S to the state 2 3P has much influence on the distribution function. This is caused partly by the large concentration of atoms in the state 2 3S (compared with atoms excited in the other mentioned states) and partly by the large excitation cross section of this transition.
