Abstract

The present study reports the influence of two seed sources (Special forest division Tangmarg and Bandipora forest division) and effect of different stratification treatments on germination and seedling growth parameters of Betula utilis in temperate region of Kashmir Himalaya. The seeds were collected in the month of September-October and subjected to six stratification durations of fifteen days interval at 4˚C ± 1˚C using completely randomized design. The seeds from Bandipora forest division performed better in terms of germination and seedling growth parameters giving maximum germination of (73.19%), seedling height (33.97 cm), collar diameter (5.42 mm), leaf area (97.03cm 2 /plant), number of leaves (11.67/seedling), seedling vigor index (25.98). Among six stratification treatments of 75 days (D 6 ) registered significantly higher germination (83.25%), plant height (43.08 cm), collar diameter (6.04 mm), seedling vigor index (36.05), leaf area (129.91 cm 2 / plant) and number of leaves (15.83/seedling). The study revealed that under nursery conditions, seeds from Bandipora forest division stratified for 75 days performed most promising treatment combination for obtaining better germination and seedling growth and hence recommended for mass multiplication of this species for conservation and management.
